How Does Central Air Work?

Air Conditioner

An air conditioner has 2 separate parts to it; these are called the condenser and the evaporator. The condenser is usually located on a concrete slab outside of the home. The purpose of the condenser is to condense the gases in your system into liquids. This is why there’s a condenser coil near the outside of your home: to convert the gaseous coolant back to liquid and send the excess heat to the outside.

The evaporator coil does the opposite of the condenser, converting liquids to gases. It is mounted in the plenum or main duct junction above the furnace and changes liquid coolant into a gas. This way, heat can be transferred through the system.

This is why a central air system is usually able to both cool and heat your home. By using both a condenser and an evaporator coil, your central air system is able to maintain a home’s temperature, both during the hot summer and the cold winter.
