Do You Have To Jiggle The Handle When You Flush?

A constantly running toilet is a common and annoying problem. You might have to jiggle the handle every time you flush. Or you might hear it flush on its own in the middle of the night. In this episode we go through the options you have to fix it. Some don’t even need any tools!

The most common cause of a running toilet is a bad flapper. Your toilet flapper is in charge of flushing your toilet. It lifts when you push down the handle and lowers as the water drains. A bad one can’t seal right and lets water run through. We go over the steps to replace it in the video.

If that doesn’t do the job, the next most common cause is a bad fill valve. If you watch under the lid when you flush, you might see water spraying out of the top of the fill valve. That’s not supposed to happen. Replacing a fill valve is more involved than replacing your flapper but it’s still doable.

If you’re still having problems, or you have more than one toilet constantly running, then you might have extra high water pressure. When your water pressure gets too high it can damage your fixtures, including your toilets. You can test yours with a water pressure gauge, and talk about it more in the video.
