The Holidays Can Strain Your Drains

Holiday get-togethers run so much smoother if you don’t have a surprise toilet clog. Or what if you’re trying to prep for dinner and your kitchen sink backs up? This article lists some warning signs of drain problems like these ones. We’ll also go over a few things you can do to decrease your chances of a drain emergency this holiday season.

WARNING SIGNS

Running Drain

Backups or Slow Drains: If you’ve had drain problems such as backups in the past, that’s a huge sign you might have issues over the holidays. If you know you have a few slow drains, those drains aren’t going to speed up when your family comes over. In general, having more people in the home will increase any existing problems.

Garbage Disposal Struggling to Keep Up: If your garbage disposal is struggling now, it could choose Christmas to quit on you. Especially if there are other people helping with the food who don’t know your disposal’s quirks. They can put things down the drain that you would know to avoid and cause a problem.

THINGS YOU CAN DO

Failed Fill Valve

Backups or Slow Drains: The first step is to talk to your guests if you have temperamental plumbing. That conversation can prevent backups from ruining the event. Keeping a plunger by the toilet can also be a huge help. Then there are bio-treatments that you can use to prevent clogs in the first place. If you’re feeling proactive, you can have a drain tech inspect your mainline before the holidays.

Garbage Disposal Struggling to Keep Up: When you’re prepping a ton of potatoes, it can be easy to dump all the peels down the drain. But doing that is hard on your garbage disposal. It’s much better to feed things in small amounts. If you’re dealing with a lot of food waste, it’s even better to toss it in the trash instead of the sink. And as always, avoid sending grease or fat down your disposal.

With these tips, you should be able to reduce your chances of a holiday drain emergency by a huge margin. Sometimes, though, our best efforts aren’t enough.
