Do You Know If You're On A Septic System?

Do you know if your home is on a septic system? Do you even know what a septic system is? In this video, we’ll talk about how to know if you’re on a septic system and how that system works. We’ll also go over some maintenance you can do to keep your septic tank working the way it should.

The plumbing for a septic system is the same as a sewer system until you get past your sewer main line. From there everything flows into a tank where it settles into layers of solids, water, and scum on top. Then the water drains into a separate box and gets filtered out into the surrounding soil.

While everything settles in the tank, bacteria work to break down the solids. Those bacteria are necessary for the septic system to work, so it’s important to keep them healthy. Anti-bacterial soaps and acid drain cleaners can ruin a septic system. It’s also a good idea to use septic-safe toilet paper.

Even with a healthy bacteria colony, solids will still build up over time. Once the tank gets about 25-33% full of solids, it’s important to pump the septic tank. We go over how to check your tank in the video. Sometimes the tank can fill up faster than that, though. If the solids fill up past the inlet pipe, they won’t let any more water come in. So, if you start having problems with back-ups it’s a good idea to start by pumping the tank. If you’re still having problems after that, calling a professional to come to take a look is a good next step. Just make sure to let them know you have a septic tank.
