Replacing An Air Conditioner: First Steps

Once you’ve decided it might be time to replace your air conditioner, you’ll probably meet with different HVAC companies to get a price and figure out what the next steps are. While price is an important factor, it is not the only factor to consider when replacing your AC. An important factor to consider, that a lot of homeowners think is a given, is a proper install.

It all starts with the planning and design phase -- the walkthrough. There is a lot of information the technician can gather by looking at and measuring your home, but there is some information about how your old system operated that only you can answer. So, when you’re talking to an HVAC company, how much attention are they paying to the structure and what your experience was with your old air conditioner?

In addition to looking at your existing structure they should be measuring the cubic feet of your home, checking the level of attic insulation, the number of doors and windows, what rooms have the most sun exposure, the altitude, etc. They should compare what size air conditioner it would take to cool your home vs the size air conditioner your ductwork was designed for. This is one of the most common things other HVAC companies miss.

Any HVAC company should also spend some time talking to you about what you liked about your old system and what you want your new air conditioner to do better. They should ask if there have been any additions/remodels since your old air conditioner was installed and ask to see the areas of the home that get unusually hot in the summer? Pay attention to how detailed they are when they’re talking about replacing your air conditioner.

Don’t ignore the way you feet when they are in your home. There are a lot of measurements and calculations that need to be made when replacing an air conditioner and if someone doesn’t take the time to do the math right, you could end up investing in a new air conditioner that can’t cool your home the way you want it to. If an HVAC company rushes through the initial walk through, what other important steps are they going to rush through?

Replacing an air conditioner is a large investment, don’t shortchange yourself.

Meet Will, an HVAC technician, and see what a day in the life of an Any Hour Services technician is like.

When should you replace your air conditioner?

Most of the time, people start thinking about replacing an air conditioner when it breaks down. When faced with the decision to replace an air conditioner, ask yourself these 4 questions and then, depending on how you answer, make a decision.

How broken is it?

This can range from “ok” to “it won’t turn on”. After you have an HVAC technician look at it they should be able to tell you if it is minor or major.

How old is your air conditioner?

15 is the magic number, that is what they say the life expectancy is for air conditioners, give or take a few years. The closer you get to that age, take that into consideration.

How often is it breaking down?

Frequency matters. If you have a 10 year old air conditioner that is breaking down every year, it is probably only going to get worse. But, on the other hand, if you have a 17 year old system that broke down for the first time, you probably still have more years to go.

How much do the repairs cost?

This is where personal preference comes into play. You have to weigh the costs of repairs and how often you’re having to make those repairs vs what it would cost to replace your air conditioner.

Any Hour Services was wonderful to work with when our system went out in the heat of summer. AHS came out quickly, gave us a quote on several different options, and promptly got our new system installed. Their technicians were professional and thoughtful when they entered our home, and followed up to make sure our system was at optimal performance. Tim K inspected everything and was a pleasure to work with. Thank you, Any Hour Services!

James E. came to our home this evening to do a service and check of our HVAC . He was great! He was super friendly and explained everything he saw going on with our system well, and made sure that we understood our options. James was truly professional, yet personable, which is hard to find these days. I give James 5 stars!!!

Tech was friendly and professional. Explained what the process was, explained what the possibilities could be and what the potential options were. Triaged and started with the least invasive troubleshooting method, which appeared to solve the issue. Explained "after care". Overall positive experience, will most likely call again if there is an issue.

I’m so impressed with Ammon and Eddy and Jeremiah and Dan the manager. I have never dealt with such great people! Dan the manager is so unbelievable! He has such a great relationship with his crew that is so amazing. They all care about doing a great job. And Steve that came and dropped off all the products. I have never been so impressed on the hard work and care they put into my job. I needed a new water line from my meter to my house. They explained everything from A to Z and really cared to do a good job. You don’t see people now days that care as much as they all do. I’m honestly so impressed! I’m so very grateful for them! I have been so stressed out about this and they made everything better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!

They've provided good service on short notice for multiple projects, but I particularly want to thank Justin C for his outstanding professionalism and general knowledge - as well as his deep knowledge of our older, rare fixtures. He knew what he was doing and did it right, though it took some extra effort. A few decades ago, this would be the guy who's company everyone was calling, and who was training the next generation of plumbers. I told him he reminded me of a lot of the best craftsmen I've known in many fields.
