Once you’ve decided it might be time to replace your air conditioner, you’ll probably meet with different HVAC companies to get a price and figure out what the next steps are. While price is an important factor, it is not the only factor to consider when replacing your AC. An important factor to consider, that a lot of homeowners think is a given, is a proper install.
It all starts with the planning and design phase -- the walkthrough. There is a lot of information the technician can gather by looking at and measuring your home, but there is some information about how your old system operated that only you can answer. So, when you’re talking to an HVAC company, how much attention are they paying to the structure and what your experience was with your old air conditioner?
In addition to looking at your existing structure they should be measuring the cubic feet of your home, checking the level of attic insulation, the number of doors and windows, what rooms have the most sun exposure, the altitude, etc. They should compare what size air conditioner it would take to cool your home vs the size air conditioner your ductwork was designed for. This is one of the most common things other HVAC companies miss.
Any HVAC company should also spend some time talking to you about what you liked about your old system and what you want your new air conditioner to do better. They should ask if there have been any additions/remodels since your old air conditioner was installed and ask to see the areas of the home that get unusually hot in the summer?
