DIY Tips for Unclogging Your Toilet
Stop the water
If your toilet is clogged, we first suggest you turn the nozzle behind your toilet to stop water from coming into the tank. You can also reach into the tank and stop the flapper from allowing water to enter the bowl by pressing down on the flapper.
Plunge Correctly
Get a good seal between the plunger and the toilet bowl. The most effective plunger is the funnel plunger; the plunger that has an inner column. Plunge in and out while maintaining the seal. Once the water starts lowering, and you hear some movement...it might be time to test your plunge job. Remember to turn your water back on before you test your next flush after plunging.
Warm Up Your Plunger
If that didn't work, try warming up your plunger by running it under some hot water before plunging! This makes the plunger more malleable and helps maintain a solid seal better than a stiff plunger.
Add Dish Detergent and Hot Water
You can also try to loosen the clog by adding a few cups of hot water to your toilet bowl. After you add the hot water, wait a few minutes. If that doesn't work, try adding some dishwasher detergent to the water. These steps can help to loosen and break up the material clogging the toilet.
Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
Another trick to unclog your toilet is to add one cup of baking soda into the bowl. Then slowly pour a cup of vinegar after that. The chemical fizzing reaction to follow can help break up the clogged material as well!
Try Using a Plumbing Snake
A plumbing snake, or auger, is a cable-like device that you "snake" down into the deeper workings of the toilet drains. These can be purchased at any home improvement store or Walmart. You will twist and turn to guide the snake towards the clog. Listen for movement, pull out, try again if needed, and interchange with the plunger for best results.
When to Call a Professional
If none of these above steps help, it is time to call a professional. This is where Any Hour Services steps in. We have the expertise and tools needed to get to the root of the issue. Sometimes the issue can be taken care of swiftly and other times a clog is the sign of a bigger issue, such as a blockage deeper in the home's mainline. Either way, our experienced technician will make sure you understand the issue and the costs before we even begin work!
