DIY Tips for a Slow Draining Shower
Drain Snake or Wire Hanger
No nasty hair clump on top of the strainer? It's possible that this drain clogging mess has made its way past the strainer and is lodged deeper in the pipe. If this is the case, a drain snake can help you remove it. If you don't have a drain snake, you can make one from a wire hanger (although it will not reach as deeply as the snake can). Push the snake deep into the drain until you encounter resistance, then spin and push the snake through the blockage a few times to break it up. Then pull the snake (or hanger) out and wipe it down, repeating a few times as necessary.
Plunger
Sometimes clogs are too deep even for a drain snake to reach. This is when a small plunger comes in handy! We recommend not to use a toilet plunger as it is too big and unsanitary. To dislodge the shower clog, place the plunger over the drain and quickly pump it up and down about ten to 15 times. You will know that the clog has been dislodged when you feel less resistance. Remove the plunger and wash the drain down with boiling water to clear out any remaining residue.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
If your shower frequently drains slowly, the problem could be dirty pipes instead of a single clog. You can try to clean out the pipe with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Simply pour half a cup of each down the drain and wait for ten to 15 minutes for the mixture to bubble and dissolve any residue in the pipe, then you can flush it clear with boiling water. This is considered a temporary fix as grimey pipes are often covered in hardened residue that requires professional cleaning.
