5 Ways To Avoid Causing Your Own Furnace Problems

A technician in a uniform kneels and inspects the interior of a furnace, with tools and wiring visible nearby—demonstrating thorough furnace maintenance to help avoid furnace problems.

Sometimes we unknowingly cause our furnaces to work harder, or even worse, stop working altogether. In this episode, we go over the top 5 things you might be doing that makes it harder for your system to keep your home comfortable. We also discuss things you can do to improve it instead.Starting at the bottom and working our way up, number 5 on this list is blocking the outside exhaust on a High-Efficiency furnace. It’s common for it to get forgotten and for things to get stacked in front of it. It’s a good idea to know where it is and to remind your family to keep it uncovered. The next common problem is a repair that seems simple, so you try to fix it yourself. While there are things you can do yourself, some projects need specific training. If you’re knee-deep in a repair project and feel like you’ve gotten in over your head, stop and call a professional to help.

Your PRV is designed to last for around 10 years, though it can fail earlier for several reasons. That’s why it’s a good idea to check the pressure every year in case it starts to seize up. Also, if you see water shoot out fast when first opening a faucet, then the flow slows a little, you might want to test your water pressure. We go over how to do that in the video. If you’re dealing with any of the symptoms we discuss in the video, Any Hour Services would be happy to help. One of our licensed plumbers can come to test your water pressure and verify if your PRV needs to go. Then they can work with you to find the best solution for you and your home. You can give us a call or schedule an appointment online.
