The average lifespan of a humidifier is ten to fifteen years. Once your humidifier passes that age, it is more likely to require repair or have declines in functionality. If you begin to notice your humidifier is having issues and is over ten years of age, you may want to consider contacting a professional to inspect the unit.

If you notice a foul odor coming from your home’s humidifier, you should stop using it until it can be repaired. The foul smell could be indicative of mold or another infestation. If you sense a burning sensation coming from your humidifier, that is a sign of an electrical problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible by a professional.

In the event that your humidifier is on but it won’t run, there is likely an internal component that is in need of repair. Be sure to double check the power source before assuming the issue is with your humidifier.

A humidistat acts for your humidifier like a thermostat does for your HVAC system. Any error with the humidistat will result in your humidifier not operating as it should, possibly making your home too humid or not humid enough. Commonly when humidistats aren’t functioning properly it is best just to replace them.
