Helpful Information About Smoke Detectors

Other than changing the battery and replacing it every 10 years, there is very little you need to do to keep your smoke detectors working. A chirping smoke detector is usually a sign the battery needs to be replaced or the smoke detector needs to be replaced. If you ever find yourself with a chirping smoke detector, try this.

How To Stop a Chirping Smoke Detector

Step 1: Change The Batteries. Most of the time, changing the batteries should stop any annoying chirping. You can watch the step-by-step video we made showing you how to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors here.

If that doesn’t work, the smoke detector has probably gone bad. Until you can replace it, this is the best way to get the chirping to stop.

Step 2: Remove the battery and disconnect the power. Then press and hold the test button until you don’t hear any sounds. Now all you need is to install a new smoke detector.

Replace Your Smoke Detector After 10 Years

The National Fire Protection Association recommends every smoke detector be replaced after 10 years. On the back of the detector, you’ll find the date it was manufactured. Replace it 10 years after that date.

Step 3: Replace old or dead smoke detectors. If you feel comfortable working around electricity, this is something you can do yourself. Or contact an electrician you trust for help.
