How Does a Water Heater Actually Work?

How often do you think about your water heater? For a lot of people, that might be when it fails. If your water heater isn’t working, it can throw off your whole day. In this video, we have an in-depth discussion on how a water heater works and what causes it to fail.

At the most basic level, a tanked water heater is a metal container filled with water. A heat source, often a gas flame, heats the water inside to a set temperature. Then that water flows to the rest of your home. When the water cools again, your water heater heats it up again.

That basic process takes a lot of components working together to get hot water to your home. To keep those components working, a water heater needs some specific maintenance. That can include flushing it, checking the water pressure, and finding any broken parts.

Taking care of your water heater can help it perform at its peak for years longer than otherwise. For example, if it’s installed right, then it doesn’t have to work as hard to get hot water to your family. If it’s flushed regularly, then it’s not trying to heat your water through a layer of sediment. And If it has all the components it needs, it’s protected from pressure build-up. That can not only help avoid leaks. It can also prevent dangerous ruptures in your home.
