Bathroom sink drains clog all the time and knowing how to fix them is an important skill for any homeowner. In this episode, we go over how to clean one out and why they clog in the first place. We also talk about a few tips and tricks when fixing a bathroom stopper.
Most of the time when a drain is running slow, the problem is in the first section of pipes. The lever used to move the stopper up and down often catches buildup before it reaches the rest of your drain. Cleaning out that section of pipe can often solve your problem on its own.
It can be a good idea to take a picture of your pipes before you take anything apart. That way you know where it all goes when you need to reassemble it. You’ll also want something to catch any water from the drain while you work. Once the set-up is complete, it’s time to take things apart.
We go over the steps in a bit more detail in the video, but it starts with removing the p trap. Unscrew the fittings and let the water drain out. Washing it out with soapy water should take care of most of the gunk. Then you can take apart and clean out the stopper assembly. That’s where the majority of the buildup tends to happen, so cleaning it out should be a big improvement. Then you can wash off the stopper before reassembling your drain with help from your picture.
