Common Questions About Tankless Water Heaters
What is a tankless water heater?
A tankless water heater heats water only when you need it and for as long as you need it. It does not have a large storage tank like a “tanked” water heater.
Why do I need a water softener with a tankless?
When you turn on the hot tap, cold water passes through a heat exchanger. In order for this heat transfer to occur as efficiently as possible the water needs to be in direct contact with the heat exchanger. If you have hard water, over time calcium and magnesium deposits can build up on the inside of the heat exchanger and reduce the efficiency and cause other problems for the tankless water heater. So in order for you to get the years of use out of your tankless water heater, we need to minimize the build-up from hard water. A water softener or other kind of water conditioning is the best way to do this.
What's the difference between tankless and standard water heaters?
2 of the most noticeable — There is no water storage tank that holds 40, 50, or 75 gallons of water, that you pay to keep hot 24/7. Tankless water heaters will supply you with hot water as long as you want it, endless hot water.
How does a tankless water heater work?
When you turn on the hot tap, the tankless runs water through a heat exchanger and continues heating the water until you close the tap.
Does it require maintenance?
Yes. In Utah, our water is extremely hard and that can cause build-up on the heat exchanger, shortening its lifespan. Manufacturers require some kind of water conditioning in order to get the extra-long warranties tankless are known for. In addition to conditioning, you need to flush the water heater periodically to de-scale the heat exchanger.
How long does a tankless water heater last?
With proper installation and maintenance, up to 25 years. Verses the 10 year life expectancy of a tanked water heater.
What if I already have a water softener and don't need a free one?
If we test the water in your home and it is doing its job, the value of the softener can be credited towards the purchase of your tankless water heater. Your plumber can show you your options.
Advantages of going tankless?
Endless hot water, save money not keeping 50 gallons of water hot 24/7, save space with a much smaller footprint, and longer life of the equipment.
How much does a tankless water heater cost?
Installing a tankless water heater is one of those plumbing projects that a plumber needs to see before quoting a price. There are several factors that determine the cost to install your tankless. Our plumbers will come to your home, discuss your current water usage, check the technical requirements for the venting, and make sure your system is sized and installed correctly so that you get the endless hot water you’re expecting. It is free to meet with one of our plumbers to find out what options are available.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
The staff that we have answering phones and scheduling appointments are not plumbers. They do not understand how to install or plumb for a tankless water heater.
There are too many variables that need a plumber to look at before quoting a price. We insist on getting our plumber on site to see what needs to be done so no crucial details are missed.
It doesn’t cost you anything to have one of our plumbers come to show you what pricing and options are available. The price they give you before the work begins is what the price will be after the work is performed.
Anyone that quotes a price over the phone is guessing and I have not met a homeowner that is happy when a plumber shows up and quotes a higher price “now that they have seen the job”.
We don’t want to quote you a low price just to get a plumber to your home only to find out something was not communicated, and your plumbing project is more difficult than originally explained over the phone.
Can you give me a ballpark price?
I have asked our plumbers to give me ballpark prices in the past and they usually answer with a long list of questions that they need answered before being able to give a price. Until our plumber sees your plumbing project, they won’t give a ballpark price.
Most ballpark prices are a guess. Another company might give a range that they hope will cover the cost to do the job. And most of the time they have to come back and ask for more money. Our experience has shown that a ballpark price is usually not in anyone’s best interest
Is it a free bid?
Yes. Just call and schedule a time that works best for you to meet one of our plumbers at your home. There’s no obligation to buy and the visit is free. Our plumber will answer all your questions, explain how the job will be installed, show you what options are available, and give you a price before any work begins.
