The Winter vs Water Heater Seasonal Battle

A technician in a branded "Any Hour Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air" shirt performs water heater maintenance in a small utility closet near a kitchen.

Cold weather can be hard on a lot of things. But did you know that it can wreak havoc on your water heater? In this episode, we’re talking about how your water heater overworks in the winter. We’ll go over why that is, what it does to your system, and what you can do about it.When water flows into your water heater in the summer, it’s about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter, it’s about 40. That temperature difference means a lot when you’re heating water up. It takes more energy and heats up a lot less water to the temperature you set.And because it has so much more work to do, your water heater has to push itself harder. The burner has to run longer and you might have a lot less hot water to use. And if you have a layer of sediment in the bottom of the tank, your water heater has to work that much harder to heat it.

All that hard work could wear anything out faster than normal. And of course, your water heater works the same way. Extra stress will cause it to wear out faster and even lead to you replacing it sooner. And unfortunately, you can’t change the temperature the water comes into the tank. But you can keep the tank flushed so that it doesn’t have to heat colder water through a layer of sediment. If you want a hand with a water heater flush or other maintenance, Any Hour Services would be happy to help. One of our licensed plumbers can take care of that for you and let you know how your unit is doing. You can give us a call or schedule an appointment online.
