That’s because they’re designed to use gravity to get wastewater away from your home. If you need to clear out your basement drains often, there could be a problem further down.A lot of times, those problems start with an older pipe. Age can break anything down, and sewer mainlines are no exception. And depending on the materials used for your home, your pipes don’t even need to be that old to fail. We go over some of those materials in the video.
A big cause of sewer mainline failure, regardless of material, is the ground settling. Because your sewer pipes are gravity-fed, they need to stay at a constant slope to do their job. If the ground settles, those pipes could form a low spot called a belly. That belly can catch solids flowing down the pipe and cause them to build up until the water can’t get past. It can also spread the joints of a pipe and let roots work their way inside.In the video, we talk about a few more ways a sewer mainline can fail.
