How To Change Batteries In A Smoke Detector

With all the things you have to juggle in your life, it’s hard to remember a simple thing like changing the batteries in your smoke detectors. When you do remember and want to know how to do it, watch this video and we'll show you how you can easily change out the batteries in your smoke alarms.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The batteries can be found in a couple of different places depending on the brand or type you have. Some of them have a door on the front and all you need to do is slide the door to the side, take the battery out, put a new one in and close the door. Just make sure you pay attention to the positive and negative terminals. There should be some kind of marking inside

Some have a door on the side and there’s a little latch on the side that releases the door. Open that, remove the old battery, and then install the new one and close the door.

There are a few more common places that batteries might be. Some are actually battery-only smoke detectors. The door actually pulls out, you take the old battery out, put a new one in, and close the door. On some smoke alarm models, you have to unscrew them counter-clockwise, pull them down from the wall in order to reveal the doors where the batteries are hidden. Also, some of them have the battery compartment screwed shut. This is where you would need a screwdriver for some of the smoke detectors. You take that out and you pop this door down, and it reveals the battery. Take the old battery out, put the new one in, close the door and screw it back up in the ceiling.

Check out our video above & we show you how to find and replace the batteries in a variety of different smoke detectors.

How To Change Smoke Detector Batteries

With all the things you have to juggle in your life, it’s hard to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detector. If you ever do remember and want to know how to, in this video we’ll show you how to replace the batteries in your smoke detector . . . come on.

This shouldn’t take too long. When it comes to replacing the -- oh, that flashing up there -- just click on that PROJECT button if you want to jump right to the project and skip all of my talking. Nice touch Cam!

When it comes to changing the batteries in your smoke detector, manufacturers actually -- you know what. I just happen to have a smoke detector owner’s user guide . . . whatever. If you look inside, you’d think it would be in the Battery Installation section, but it’s not. It’s in the Maintenance section. It says that, “A fresh battery should last for one year under normal operating conditions.” A lot of people in the industry say that Daylight Savings Time (DST) is a great time to actually change that battery. So every November, you should think about changing it.

I know most of you probably wait ‘til it just starts chirping. But all joking aside, it’s a great idea to replace smoke detector batteries once a year. And it doesn’t take a lot of tools. The only thing you’re going to need is a ladder and if your smoke detectors are really old, you might need a screwdriver.

So, let me show you how. The batteries can be in a couple of different places, I’ll show you some of the most common.

Some of them have a door on the front like this one. All you need to do is slide the door to the side, take the battery out, put a new one in and close the door. Just make sure you pay attention to the positive and negative terminals. There should be some kind of marking inside.

This one has a door on the side. There’s a little latch on the side that releases the door. Open it, remove the old battery, install the new one and close the door.

There’s a few more common places that batteries might be. I’ve got some smoke detectors in the other room that I want to show you. Come on. Now these are some smoke detectors that our technicians removed from a job and they are different examples of how batteries can be in the detectors. So, I wanted to show you those.

This one right here is actually a battery-only smoke detector. The door actually pulls out. You take the old battery out, put a new one in, close the door, and you’re good to go on that one.

Now, these two are a little different because you actually need to unscrew them counter-clockwise, pull them down from the wall to reveal the doors where the batteries are hidden. This one there’s actually a screw. This is where you would need a screwdriver on some of the smoke detectors. But there’s a screw right there. You take that out and you pop this door down, and it reveals the battery. Take the old battery out, put the new one in, close the door and screw it back up in the ceiling. And that one’s good.

This one, unscrew it and pull it down. It has a door that you actually have to pry open and you remove the battery. Replace it with a new one, close the door and put it up in the ceiling.

How Often Should I Replace My Smoke Detector?

Since we talked earlier about pulling smoke detectors down, this is actually a good time to mention that manufacturers recommend replacing the smoke detector after 10 years. Not just the batteries every year, replace the whole detector after 10 years. The reason is because they start to go bad and they’re not working as good.

Where Can I Find The Date It Was Manufactured?

A lot of people wonder where do I actually find the date of when it was manufactured because it’s the date of when the smoke detector was made, not the date when it’s installed. When you pull it down off the wall, on the back there should be a date somewhere that shows when the thing was made. Replace it if it’s older 10 years. If you need some help knowing how to do that, we put a video together about how to replace your smoke detector. It’s pretty easy to follow, step by step, you should be able to do it yourself. But, if you ever feel like you’ve gotten in over your head, STOP and call an electrician you trust for some help.

Pricing FAQ

A:

The prices you are quoted come out of our pricing guide. We have looked at the most common tasks we are asked to perform and figured out the average time to perform the task, the cost of the materials, and the cost associated with running a drain business that is able to stand behind that work.

To calculate the cost of your drain project, your plumber will determine the tasks needed. Each task has a price associated with it, which your plumber will add together to arrive at your total. This method allows us to identify and rule out unnecessary tasks, prioritizing fairness and transparency (while saving you money).

Our pricing method is not influenced by the neighborhood someone lives in but is designed to be fair and transparent. When we designed our pricing guide, we asked ourselves, “What does it take to perform this task?” NOT, “How much can we get a person to pay?” This commitment to honest, clear pricing reflects our respect for our clients.

When you charge by the hour, you can only give a price after the job is finished. We don’t want you to have to wait until the end of the job to find out how much it costs.

We believe there are too many variables that make “charging by the hour” more of a win for the company than for the homeowner. There are the things that a homeowner has no control over but ends up paying the price for anyway: if a technician has to leave the job to get a part, if technicians work more slowly, if the job takes longer than expected, etc. With “charging by the hour,” there’s no accountability on the plumbing company to have their trucks stocked better, train their technicians better, or run their business more efficiently.

Our commitment to a fair and transparent pricing model is unwavering. We believe in doing right by everyone involved: the homeowner, the technician, and the company. This is not just a business decision, but a moral one, ensuring that everyone is treated with the fairness and respect they deserve.

The staff answering our phones and scheduling appointments are not technicians. They do not understand how the plumbing in your home works or how to price the work you need help with.

Our process involves a comprehensive on-site assessment by our technicians to ensure no crucial details are missed. This thorough approach that looks at all variables is how we can provide you with a price that remains unchanged from the start to the completion of the work: the price we give you before the begins is what the cost will be after the work is performed. Here at Any Hour Services, we believe in honest pricing.

Pricing FAQ

A:

Our pricing is fair and transparent. It’s based on a fixed-price guide that considers the time, materials, and costs of running a reliable home services business. We don’t charge by the hour or inflate prices based on your neighborhood. We ask ourselves, “What does it take to get the job done?,” not “How much can we charge?”

Before we price your plumbing job, our licensed plumber will perform an in-home assessment to evaluate the tasks required. We only charge for what’s necessary—no fluff, no extra costs. This allows us to pinpoint areas where we can save you money without sacrificing quality.

Hourly rates can be unpredictable, leaving you unsure of the final cost until the job is done. We believe in upfront, fixed pricing based on the work itself—not guesswork. You won’t pay for delays or mistakes, and we hold ourselves accountable to ensure there are no surprises.

A:

We prefer to price based on the job and not what other companies charge. Hourly rates can lead to unexpected costs for homeowners, making the final price unpredictable. By pricing the work itself, we make sure you’re only paying for what’s actually needed—keeping things fair and efficient.

Water heater replacements vary. Often, older units require updates to meet safety standards. Common items missing from many water heaters are flexible gas lines, expansion tanks, earthquake straps, gas sediment trap, upgrade exhaust venting, etc.

For an accurate quote, one of our licensed plumbers will inspect your existing system and provide a FREE estimate.

A:

Our phone staff are not licensed plumbers, so they can’t quote prices that would be accurate to your project’s needs. A trained plumber needs to see the job firsthand to give you a clear, upfront price. Quotes over the phone are a guess, and we prefer transparency over uncertainty.

A:

Ballpark prices can be misleading. Until we see the job, we can’t quote your final estimate accurately. Other companies may give an estimate range, but that often leads to additional costs and surprises later. Instead, we focus on giving you a fair price once a licensed plumber can assess the job properly.
