When You Might Want a Heat Pump Vs. a Gas Furnace

The term “heat pump” might sound like something that goes on your car. But today we’re going to talk about what it actually is, and why you might want one. Then we’re going to compare it to a standard gas furnace to help you decide the best fit for your home.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is almost like an air conditioner in reverse. Where an air conditioner takes the hot air out of your home, a heat pump pulls it in. That means it doesn’t have to superheat the air in your system to warm up your home. And it would circulate the air with a similar exterior unit as your air conditioner.

Why You Might Want a Heat Pump

You might want a heat pump for several different reasons. Heat pumps are more efficient than gas furnaces at heating up your home evenly. That helps you avoid hot or cold spots when you walk through the house. They’re also better for the environment because they don’t put gases out while they work. Because of that, the government offers rebates to help you cover the costs of installing one.

Why You Might Want a Gas Furnace

What is your favorite thing to do on a cold day? Is it turning on the heater to feel the warm air rushing out? Then a gas furnace might be a good choice for you. The air starts out warmer than with a heat pump and leaves your vents at warmer average temperatures, though there are heat pump options that address this. A gas furnace can also heat your home more effectively at temperatures lower than roughly 30 degrees.

Why You Might Want Both

Many homes use a combination of the two. The heat pump warms the home to a comfortable level most of the time. Then the gas furnace kicks in when the temperature drops lower than around 30 degrees. That lets you have both the efficiency of the heat pump and the low temperature range of the gas furnace.
