Did That Earthquake Damage Your Pipes?
If you live in Utah, you might have experienced an earthquake shaking your home. After you’re sure everyone is safe, it can be hard to know what to do next. In this video, We’re talking about some things you can check after an earthquake to see if your home is safe.
The first things to check after an earthquake are your furnace and water heater. Water and gas lines lead into them, and older homes often use solid pipes instead of flexible lines. Those solid lines can shift and separate when your home shakes, leaking water or gas into your home.
Your first step should be to check the area to see if something looks out of place. If there is a leak of some kind, you might see water seeping through a crack or smell gas in the air. Most modern water heaters have earthquake straps, but if yours doesn’t, it could have tipped over.
If you know where your shutoff valves are, you can turn off a leaking system to prevent further damage. And if you smell gas, it might be a good idea to leave the home until the gas company can make sure it’s safe.
If you do notice anything around the house, it's a good idea to get a professional out to take a look. In that case, Any Hour Services would be happy to help. You can give us a call to set up an appointment or if you have an emergency. You can also schedule an appointment online.
