Your heating and cooling system works by pulling air from the house across the system to condition it. Then it pushes it back out to the house.

Anything that gets in the way of that process or impedes the airflow causes your system to work harder. That means you pay higher utility bills and it can shorten the life of your system. The number one thing a homeowner can do to help with all these is to maximize airflow wherever possible.
