Helpful Tip- Basement Flooding
When disaster strikes unexpectedly and a basement floods, homeowners are often overwhelmed, unsure of what to do and panicked. As a homeowner, quick action on your part will ensure safety and reduce the damage to your home.
At Any Hour Services we have put together a list of steps to take immediately following the discovery of a flooded basement.
- Turn off power to the area, call a qualified Utah electrician if you are unsure how to do so.
- Do not walk through the water without first turning the power off, the risk of electric shock is very real in basement floodings.
- Call a licensed plumber in Utah immediately to determine the cause of the flooding and turn off the basement’s water source if you are able.
- Be aware of potential hazards entering water. Determine if the water source is coming from the sewer and wear protective gear before entering if so.
- Locate your basement floor drain and check to make sure that it is unclogged and functional.
- Once you have determined that it is safe to enter the area, start removing the water. Some options are to use a sump pump, a pool pump, wet/dry vacuum or simply by the bucketload.
- Once the water is removed start moving furniture and other items out of the basement to dry.
- Call your home insurance agency as soon as possible to get your claim processing. Take lots of photos, document any damage you can and save every receipt that correlates with repairs.
