5 Ways To Use Water More Efficiently In Your Home
Saving water should be a part of everyone’s habits and conservation at home is one of the easiest measures to put in place. It doesn’t have to involve a big cost or effort to do either. Although there are water-saving appliances, the majority of water saving methods can be done with no cost or a very small cost.
1- DON'T LEAVE WATER RUNNING
When hand washing dishes, if you have a double-basin, fill one with soapy water and one with rinse water. If using a single-basin sink, gather washed dishes in a dish rack and rinse them with a spray device or a tub full of hot water. Use this technique to rinse off dishes that go in the dishwasher too. (Everybody says you shouldn’t have to, but we all know in reality, you do). Just rinse them in a sink or tub of water instead of by running water continuously. Also, washing your fruits & veggies in a pan or tub of clean water instead of running water can save H2O too.
2- RE-THINK THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL
In-sink garbage disposals require a lot of water to work properly. Also, many items you put down there end up coating the sides of pipes or get stuck which can cause some plumbing issues. So, rethink what you need to put down your garbage disposal. If you can throw it away, it’s best to do that instead.
3- WASH FULL LOADS
Both dishwashers and clothes washers should be fully-loaded for best water conservation. Don’t run small or half-loads - wait until it’s full to run it. Additional Tip - Did you know the perm press cycle on a washer uses an additional 5 gallons of water for the extra rinse? Avoid using this cycle as it’s not worth the extra water usage and cost.
4- AERATORS ON FAUCETS
This is one of the cheapest and best best home water conservation methods to use on all the faucets in your home.
5- INSULATE WATER PIPES
Another easy and inexpensive thing you can do is insulate the water pipes under the sinks in your home with pre-slit foam pipe insulation you can buy at any hardware store. This can help hot water come faster which helps decrease the water waste that occurs when running water while waiting for it to heat up.
