Even if a technician diagnoses your system and tells you it cannot be repaired and that your only option is replacement, you have the option to get a second opinion. Unless they don't make parts for your air conditioning unit anymore (which is rare), replacement parts should be available. Make sure to get a second opinion so you can know all your options - and find the option that works best for you and your situation. 

However, bear in mind that repair isn't always less expensive than replacement. Sometimes, replacing the system is financially a better option. So, be sure you are provided with a full list of options and that you have the opportunity to decide which one is best for you.
