Snow on the warmer part of the roof melts and flows down until it reaches the area of the roof below 32°F. There, this water refreezes, sometimes clogging your gutters, and then begins to form an ice dam.

The dam grows as it’s fed by melting snow above, causing a backup of the snow melt trying to make its way down.
